Beach Bound or Pool Side Essentials

I am itching to get to the beach but I don't know if I will be taking a trip any time soon. Last summer, my sisters and I went in on a big above ground pool for our background, its kind of redneck but also kind of awesome. This year my dad built a deck for it so it actually is pretty nice so I do spend a lot of time out by the pool. So whether you are heading to the beach or laying out by the pool here are a few of my summer necessities!

Cute Bathing Suits- How cute are these 3 suits? They are from Target. Once again my favorite store doesn't disappoint!

Monogram Baseball Hat- I've had my monogram baseball hat for probably 4 years and it has been a lifesaver on my color treated hair. There are so many cute styles out there right now on Etsy!

Adorable Cover-Up- This tunic is actually Crewcuts but I've recently discovered I can fit in the size 14 it looks similar to the dress from Old Navy that is sold out everywhere but is more like a poncho which I think would make an adorable cover-up.

Rainbow Flip Flops- These are my go-to flip flops, I just can't bring myself to wear any other types. These braided ones are too cute!

Lands End Tote- I've had my canvas tote since college and you can use it for so many different things but its great for carrying all your stuff to the beach or the pool and it holds up for forever.

Cerave Sunscreen Stick- I love Cerave products, I use the cleanser and the moisturizer daily and my dermatologist is a big Cerave promoter the sunscreen is great and doesn't break out my face.

What are your summer necessities? As always, I am linking up Long Distance Loving's Friday's Fancies, be sure to check out everyone else's beach bag essentials!

p.s. So Google Reader is shutting down on Monday. I never thought it would really come and now I'm pretty bummed. I've moved all my blogs to BlogLovin and I guess I will start reading from there Monday :( To follow my blog through BlogLovin just click the icon on the side of this page or click here

A Mexican Inspired Salad

In the summer, I love making salads. They are just the perfect thing to eat when its so hot and its just a light but filling meal. Last summer before I started working, me and my sisters had "Taco Tuesday" we really didn't ever fix tacos, we typically had quesadillas but the name stuck. Now that I'm not working again we've kind of picked it back up so I combined "Taco Tuesday" with my love for salads and made a mexican style chopped salad with chicken. I looked at a few different recipes on pinterest and kind of developed my own recipe. There are so many different recipes out there and the sky is the limit!

Ingredients:
2 chicken breasts
Taco Seasoning

Tortillas
Pepper Jack Cheese

Romaine Lettuce
1 Avocado chopped
2/3 cup black beans
1/2 cup cheese (I used a mix of pepper jack and cheddar)

Dressing:
1/2 cup mayonaise
2/3 cup greek yogurt
1 tablespoon ranch seasoning
1 tablespoon taco seasoning

Directions:
Season chicken with taco seasoning and heat a skillet on medium-high heat. Sear both sides and cook until cooked all the way through. Let cool and chop into chunks.

While the chicken is cooling, make some quesadillas on the same skillet on medium-high heat with the tortillas and pepper jack cheese. Slice into strips to serve with the salad.

For the dressing, mix all of the ingredients in a container and keep in the fridge until ready to assemble salads.

To assemble the salads, combine the black beans, cheese, avocado and lettuce. Then top with the chicken and dress. I didn't think about this until after I ate the salad but some crushed tortilla chips would give the salad a nice crunch and a little more of a salty flavor.

I definitely plan on making this salad again and other variations of it because it combines two of my favorites: mexican and salad!

What I'm Reading Wednesday

Changing things up a little this Wednesday and sharing my summer reading. In the past few months I've had no time to read so once again I am taking this time of not working to do all the things I've wanted to get done. I've collected book titles over the past few months and finally got some for my kindle and checked some out from the library to read. Here are 4 that I have already read:

Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler: I really enjoyed this book. Since high school I've always had a fascination with the Fitzgeralds and with Zelda being from Alabama, I love reading books about them. What makes this book unique is that its a novel so its fiction but based on their lives. The author used the old letters between Scott and Zelda and biographies to put together this really great story.

Revenge Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger: I read The Devil Wears Prada in high school and of course loved the movie so I had to read to see what Andy Sachs was up to. I liked knowing kind of what happens in her life after Runway but the story kind of jumped from place to place and to me, didn't flow seamlessly like the first book.

Crushed, Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard: So these books are my guilty pleasure. They are probably written on a 5th grade reading level but I love reading what crazy crap Sara Shepard comes up with and the situations she puts the liars in. The books are very different from the tv show but still insane. I feel pretty silly reading these books but I just can't stop.

The Honest Life by Jessica Alba: Everyone knows Jessica Alba is one of my style inspirations and I love the living environmentally conscious lifestyle that she lives. I thought this book may just be geared to mothers but its so not. From home decor to cooking, this book covers everything you need to know about living "The Honest Life"

These are next on my list.

The Engagements by J. Courtney Sullivan: I have to admit this book came up on my suggestions for you on Amazon and I just really liked the way to cover looked but the summary sounds good so hopefully it won't disappoint!

The Bling Ring by Nancy Jo Sales: The Bling Ring story totally fascinates me. How a bunch of teenagers can break into celebrities homes blows me away. I've heard mixed things about the movie and its not playing anywhere near me so I think I will settle for reading the book.

Wedding Night by Sophie Kinsella: I've loved Sophie Kinsella since Confessions of a Shopaholic and while the stories are mostly romantic fluff but I love it so I can't wait to read this one.

Don't Worry It Gets Worse by Alida Nugent: This is another one that came up on my Amazon suggestions, its a twentysomething memoir about a girl living in a postgrad world. Since this is my life, I feel like I can relate.

What's on your summer reading list? I am always up for suggestions!

Dipped Flatware DIY

(via)

I saw this flatware on Southern Weddings a few weeks ago and was instantly obsessed. The fun colors and the classic shape of the flatware, I knew I wanted to try and attempt to make my own. Last week I took a trip to Michaels to pick out my paint colors (I wanted them to match my tablecloth) and then headed to the Dollar Tree to pick out some flatware. Lucky for me, the Dollar Tree had some pretty shaped flatware that I could test out. Target had a set I really liked but I didn't want to spend a ton when I wasn't totally sure how it would turn out. It turned out great and was so easy so I think I may be heading back to Target to get the set! This DIY is super simple and super cheap, I spent less than $10 and there are so many different variations you could do with this DIY.
Here is what you need:
Paint (Just used the same acrylic paint I used on the tablecloth)
Styrofoam Cups (for dipping)
Something to hang the flatware on so the excess can drip off ( I used a coat hanger and clothes pins)
Painters Tape
Clear Acrylic Sealer

What do to: First tape off the flatware as to how much you want to dip. I was going to use a paint brush but it kept leaving stroke marks so I decided to dip. I put paint into styrofoam cups and then just dipped the flatware in. I then hung up each piece of on a clothes hanger with a clothespin and let them drip off onto a piece of cardboard. This will take a little while to dry but just leave it hanging, it may seem like it isn't all going to drip off but I promise it will eventually. After its almost dry (probably like 90%) spray the clear acrylic adhesive to keep the paint from chipping off. Let that set for a couple of hours and that's it! So simple but so neat right?

I am so obsessed with these. Now I would probably hand wash these carefully because even though I sprayed the clear acrylic, I just don't know how they would do in the dishwasher. These would be so great for a party or event or just for everyday flatware. I think its a great way to brighten up a meal!

building my wrap(ping) skills

I have to admit, I am terrible at wrapping presents. It is just a skill I can't seem to master. Every Christmas I am put in charge of wrapping all the gifts for my mom and every year I try and try but I just can't master it. When we were working on a Christmas book at work, I tried to watch and learn from one of the stylists but still couldn't get it. For Father's day, I headed to Target (yes I know, I go there for everything) and picked out some cute paper determined to do a good job at wrapping it. After practicing a little, I wrapped the present up pretty well and everyone was a little shocked. With wedding season and birthdays coming up, I definitely want to build the wrap skill, so I pulled a little inspiration and found a few gift wrapping essentials that I think might help me get better. Is anyone else bad like me?

(via)
Any excuse to use pink and gold!

(via)
How cute is this gift idea? Find a cute wooden box, bake some cupcakes or cookies, get some candles and make some confetti and boom! A birthday box, a gift with built in wrapping!

(via)
I love this paper because it looks like Paper Source but you can print it for free from the source!

(via)
Continuing my obsession with washi tape, it is the perfect accessory to a simple wrapping paper.

(via)
I love the lace details on these gifts, they would be so pretty for a wedding gift.

These are a few of my favorite finds. Some of my favorite places to hit up for cute gift wrap are Target (duh!), Paper Source and Etsy. I have also found some cute bows and paper at Walmart before, you never really know where you might find cute stuff for your gift collection.

Where are your favorite places to go for fun gift wrap?

Summer WishList

This summer has wound up being not the summer I quite expected, but being  out of a job and not sure where to go next but it has actually turned out to be a good thing for me, I have been getting so much done and doing projects that I never got around to. I have had to tighten the belt on my spending though which leads to me doing a lot of window shopping and making wishlists for different things. Last week I did a major haul on my closet and realized that I really don't need any new clothes for summer but a girl can dream right? Since I spent the last year working for a cookbook publishing company and being around props 24/7, I have also acquired an addiction to home and table accessories so on top of my fashion wishlist, I have made an entertaining wishlist of things that I think would be great for summer entertaining. Combine the two and you would have a fashionable summer party!

I am linking up with Long Distance Loving's Friday's Fancies! I'm sure I will be spotting more items to add to my wishlist! Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

Copycat Recipe: Cookie Butter

Ikea, Nordstrom, H&M, and Trader Joe's. What do these things have in common? They don't have stores in Birmingham. Its such a bummer, so whenever I go to Atlanta, I have to stop at the places and stock up. Of course one thing that everyone loves from Trader Joe's is Cookie Butter.. I mean how can you not? Its just so delicious! The local newspaper did a survey of the most wanted stores in the state and Trader Joe's topped the list. The paper then reached out to TJ's and asked if they planned to open a store here any time soon and sadly the answer was no. So I searched Pinterest for a recipe for the delectable cookie butter and of course I found one! It was so stinkin easy, I can't even tell you how simple and fast it was.

I got the recipe from Averie Cooks and its actually Cookie Peanut Butter, which for me makes it even better because I am a peanut butter lover. You start out making your own peanut butter base and then you add everything else.. I am going off on a little sidenote here but first if you don't have a food processor, go out and buy one, that thing is amazing. Second I think from here on out, I will be making my peanut butter homemade, it was so easy, and tasted like the honey roasted peanut butter you can buy at Whole Foods for $4.99 a pound. A can of honey roasted peanuts at Target is $2.50 and thats the only ingredient you need. I'm obsessed..

So back to Cookie Butter, here is what you need:
(my cousin Lake, loves to be my little helper.. his favorite thing was putting the gingersnaps into the food processor)

Ingredients:
16 ounces of honey roasted or dry roasted peanuts
12 to 15 gingersnap cookies (whatever brand you prefer, I used Market Pantry-Target brand)
1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon (I got home and realized we didn't have any so I used cinnamon sugar and it turned out fine)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 heaping cup white chocolate chips

Directions:
Add peanuts to the canister of the food processor and turn on high until creamy like peanut butter, this will probably take about 5 minutes. Then add the gingersnap cookies, cinnamon and vanilla and process for 1-2 minutes. I put the cookies in whole and they crushed up fine, if you aren't sure if your food processor will grind them whole, maybe crush them up a little first. After all of that is mixed together, add in the white chocolate chips and process for another 1-2 minutes until it is smooth and creamy. Then transfer and store into a glass jar. Try not to eat the whole thing at once, its seriously so delicious and you can eat so much with it, cookies, crackers, whatever.. My favorite thing to do is mix a little into some greek yogurt for a sweet and semi-healthy treat.
